Loving Ourselves: Embracing God’s Design

In the craziness of raising children, being a wife and mother, having a career, whatever your calling is;  it’s easy to forget one essential commandment that holds the power to change not only our lives but also the world around us. Matthew 22:37-40 reminds us of this divine instruction: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” However, let’s take a moment to focus on those two little words often overlooked in this passage – “as yourself.”

God didn’t make a mistake when He created you, and He certainly didn’t make a mistake when He created me. We are each a unique masterpiece crafted in His image, with a tapestry of talents, abilities, and quirks that make us beautifully individual. Yet, how often do we undermine this truth by neglecting to love ourselves?

Loving ourselves can be a challenging concept in a world that often encourages self-criticism and comparison. But let’s remember that our Creator intentionally designed us the way we are, with purpose and intention. He shaped our personalities, our strengths, and even our imperfections. Each facet of our being is a brushstroke in the divine masterpiece of our lives.

When we embrace and love ourselves as God intended, we unlock a wellspring of blessings, not only for our own lives but for those around us. Here’s why:

Authentic Love Flows: When we love ourselves, we naturally become better equipped to love others genuinely. We extend grace and compassion to ourselves, which overflows into our relationships with friends, family, and even strangers.

Discovering Our Purpose: By acknowledging and nurturing our unique talents and abilities, we find our God-given purpose. We can serve others more effectively when we understand our strengths and how they can be used for good.

Empathy and Understanding: Self-love allows us to empathize with others more effectively. We understand that, just like us, they have their own struggles, insecurities, and imperfections. This understanding fosters deeper, more meaningful connections.

Breaking Free from Comparison: Loving ourselves helps us break free from the cycle of comparison. We recognize that our worth is not defined by external measures but by the intrinsic value placed in us by our Creator.  This is a trap that I feel most wives and mothers fall into.  Let’s end that cycle!

A Positive Ripple Effect: As we love ourselves, we set an example for those around us, inspiring them to do the same. Our self-love can become a beacon of hope in a world often plagued by self-doubt.

In conclusion, Matthew 22:37-40 teaches us that loving our neighbors as ourselves begins with loving ourselves. It’s a reminder that God fashioned each of us with intention, care, and love. By embracing who we are, acknowledging our worth, and celebrating our uniqueness, we pave the way for a brighter, more loving world. So, let’s remember that loving ourselves isn’t a selfish act; it’s a divine calling that can transform our lives and, ultimately, the world.  As you gather you and yours around your Table of Grace today, remember to love yourself…….and teach them to love themselves also!  It starts with you!
