Living a Legacy of Faith: Filling Our Homes with God’s Presence

Living a legacy of faith is a goal for most families.  We want to leave behind a positive impact that extends beyond our time on Earth.  One way to achieve this is by filling our homes with the presence of God and allowing His light to shine through us. When we build families who love God, we create a strong foundation for the generations to come.  There are several ways to do this:

1 – Filling Our Homes with the Presence of God

It is essential to prioritize God’s presence within our homes. This involves establishing a daily routine of prayer, worship, and meditation on God’s Word.  When we invite God into our lives and dedicate time to connect with Him, we experience a deeper understanding of His love, grace, and guidance.  When we invite God into our home, it creates an atmosphere of peace, joy, and spiritual growth.

Practical ways to fill our homes with God’s presence include:

Family Prayer and Worship: Set aside regular times for family prayer and worship.  Starting off your family dinner with prayer and a scripture is an easy way to start incorporating this into your family routine.

Scripture Reading: Make reading the Bible a habit within your household. Choose stories and encourage your children to study the teachings and values found in God’s Word.

Gratitude and Praise:  Encourage an “attitude of gratitude” and praise, thanking God for the blessings and faithfulness in your lives. Celebrate and recognize His goodness together as a family.

2 – Letting His Light Shine Through Us

We must let God’s light shine through our actions and attitudes.  We need to show God’s love and character, and be a living testament to His grace and mercy. By demonstrating kindness, forgiveness, and compassion, we reflect the light of Christ to those around us.

Practical ways to let God’s light shine through us include:

Serving Others: As a family, plan acts of service and kindness in your community.  Show Christ’s love by reaching out to those in need and offering help and support.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation: Teach your children the importance of seeking forgiveness and extending it to others, making sure they reconcile with each other.

Being a Light in the World: Lead by example in your workplace, school, or social circles. Display integrity, honesty, and humility, showing the power of God’s word in your life.

3 – Building Families with a Heart for God

We need to prioritize spiritual growth and discipleship. As parents, it is our responsibility to teach and encourage our children in their faith journey. By teaching them to spend time in God’s Word daily, we equip them with the tools they need to find comfort, guidance, and joy; that only comes when we seek a relationship with God.

Practical ways to build families with a heart for God include:

Family Devotions: Open family dinner with a small devotion that encourages children to share a bible story or verse.

Prayer:  Have regular family prayer, including praying for others; teaching our children empathy and encouraging them to see beyond just their needs.

Church Involvement: Actively participate in your local church community, attending services, and engaging in fellowship with other believers.

Living a legacy of faith is summed up in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 which says, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

By filling our homes with the presence of God, we encourage spiritual growth, love, and unity. As we let God’s light shine through us, we can show the love of Christ to others, bringing glory to Him and drawing them closer to Him. By building families with a heart for God, we ensure that our children are anchored in God’s Word, trust in His guidance, and strive to bring glory to Him.  And we can begin at family dinner, around our own Table of Grace.
