Getting to Know Jesus: Not just a Social Media Relationship

Hey there, friends!

In this age of technology and connectivity, we find ourselves scrolling through countless pictures, reading posts, and even delving into the past of people we barely know. The platforms like Facebook and Instagram offer us a window into their lives, their thoughts, and their experiences. But as we navigate these virtual realms, it’s crucial to remember that merely engaging with someone’s online persona doesn’t equate to truly knowing them. And guess what? The same applies to our relationship with Jesus.

We live in a world where everything is just a click away, including the gospel and teachings of Jesus Christ. It’s undeniably convenient to access spiritual content online, read posts about faith, and watch videos that inspire us. These resources can serve as a great starting point, but they’re not the entire journey. Much like how viewing social media profiles doesn’t make us experts on someone’s life, reading about Jesus on a screen doesn’t mean we truly know Him.

Imagine this scenario: You stumble upon someone’s Instagram page, browse their pictures, read their posts, and even watch their stories. You might feel like you’re starting to understand their personality and life, but can you confidently say you know them as a close friend? Similarly, when it comes to our Savior, we need to go beyond the surface-level engagement. We can’t rely solely on social media-style interactions to form a deep and meaningful relationship with Jesus.

Jesus desires more than just a superficial “like” on His teachings. He invites us to dive deeper, to explore His Word and spend time understanding His teachings and His love for us. It’s not about merely consuming content; it’s about allowing His teachings to transform our lives. Just like a genuine friendship takes time, investment, and shared experiences, our relationship with Jesus demands our commitment, our hearts, and our willingness to grow in faith.

The analogy between our online interactions and our spiritual journey underscores the importance of community and real-life engagement. Just as scrolling through someone’s posts won’t forge a real connection, attending church services and Bible study groups isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about being part of a community that shares the same faith and passion for knowing Jesus more intimately.

Let’s face it: Jesus doesn’t want a one-sided interaction where we occasionally “like” His messages. He yearns for a true relationship, one where we come together in worship, spend time in His Word, and open our hearts to His presence. Like any relationship, this one requires investment, effort, and the genuine desire to know Him.

One scripture that talks about Jesus wanting a true relationship with us is found in the New Testament of the Bible, in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 3:20 (NIV) says:

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

In this verse, Jesus uses the imagery of knocking on a door to represent His desire to have a personal and intimate relationship with individuals. The act of “eating together” symbolizes fellowship and communion, emphasizing the depth of the relationship He seeks to have with us. This verse highlights Jesus’ invitation for us to open our hearts and lives to Him, so that He can have a genuine and meaningful relationship with us.

So, let’s keep using social media to access spiritual content and stay inspired. But let’s also remember that it’s only the beginning. If we want to truly know Jesus, we need to make the effort to spend time in His Word, engage in heartfelt worship, foster connections within our faith community, and gather our family around our table to symbolize fellowship and communion. Jesus wants to know us intimately, and He invites us to know Him in the same way.

In a world of surface-level interactions, let’s strive for a genuine relationship with our Savior. Beyond the digital realm, let’s allow Jesus to touch our lives, transform our hearts, and lead us into a journey of true connection and devotion.  Let’s start today, around our Table of Grace.
