Building Piles of Stones: A Reminder of God’s Goodness

Hey friends! Today, I want to talk about an old but incredibly meaningful practice inspired by Joshua 4:7 in the Bible. It’s all about building our own “piles of stones” to remember the wonderful things that God has done in our lives.

Now, let’s dive into Joshua 4:7 first. In this verse, we find the Israelites on the brink of a significant moment – the crossing of the Jordan River. God had already parted the Red Sea for them, but this was a new generation, a fresh start. God instructed Joshua to choose twelve men, one from each tribe, and to command them to take twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan River, where the priests’ feet stood firm, and carry them to their campsite. These stones would serve as a memorial for future generations, reminding them of God’s mighty hand in leading them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land.

Isn’t it fascinating how something as simple as stones can hold such profound significance? Just like the Israelites, we can build our own “piles of stones” in our lives. These are tangible reminders of the incredible things God has done for us. They serve as a beacon of hope during challenging times and a testament to God’s faithfulness.

So, what are your “piles of stones”? Here are some examples from my own life:

Journaling: I keep a journal where I jot down moments of answered prayers, unexpected blessings, and personal growth. Whenever I feel discouraged or distant from God, flipping through these pages brings me back to a place of gratitude.

Photographs: Pictures capture memories like nothing else. I have an album filled with snapshots of moments where God’s presence was palpable – from family gatherings to breathtaking sunsets.

Scripture Verses: Sometimes, a particular verse can have a profound impact on our lives. I have a notebook where, each morning, I write down verses that speak to me personally. When I face challenges, revisiting these verses provides the strength and guidance I need.

Prayer Journal: Writing my prayers allows me to communicate with God in a thoughtful and intentional way. It helps me express my thoughts and emotions more clearly.   It has become a record of answered prayers and miracles in my life.

Community Stories: Sharing stories of God’s goodness with friends and family is like building a collective “pile of stones.” We encourage one another by recounting moments when God moved in our lives, reinforcing our faith.

These “piles of stones” help me stay connected to my faith and remind me that God is with me in every season of life. They serve as a testament to His goodness, faithfulness, and love.

I encourage you to think about your own “piles of stones.” What tangible reminders can you create to remember God’s goodness in your life? It could be as simple as starting a journal, framing a favorite verse, or collecting meaningful keepsakes. Let these markers of faith be a source of strength and encouragement as you navigate the journey of life.

What piles of stones have you built in your life to remind you of God’s goodness?  Perhaps a good way to start would be share small “stones” around your Table of Grace, each evening.  Create a habit with your family of sharing and building your pile together!
