When Rainstorms and Faith Collide: Jesus Calms Our Storms

Life has a mysterious way of teaching us profound lessons at the most unexpected moments. One such moment occurred as I was taking my baby to see the Geneticist.  This was a very important appointment and one that I could not miss.  As I was driving, the clear skies darkened and a fierce rainstorm started.  It was during this colossal downpour when my windshield wipers unexpectedly quit working, leaving me facing a dilemma on a wet and treacherous freeway.   I pulled off the nearest exit and into a parking lot, with my arm extended out my window, wiping the windshield with a rag; trying to see as best I could.  As I faced this challenge, I found myself leaning on faith, and what happened next was nothing short of miraculous. I prayed hard that the wipers would begin working again and I could continue on so we wouldn’t miss our appointment.  In a beautiful twist of events, instead of my prayers being answered through my windshield wipers, God had a different plan – He stopped the rain itself. This experience reminded me that sometimes, in life’s trials, we need to trust in a higher power, for Jesus is always there to calm our storms.

The Rainstorm and a Prayer:

It was an ordinary day, or so it seemed, until the weather changed dramatically. The sky darkened, and the rain began to fall in torrents, almost blinding my vision as I drove through the relentless storm. I turned on my windshield wipers to battle the downpour, only to find they had stopped working, leaving me unable to see and scared as I pulled off the freeway. In that moment, my mind raced, considering all the potential outcomes of this situation. Fear and anxiety crept into my heart, and I felt helpless.

Seeking divine intervention, I offered a heartfelt prayer, asking for the wipers to start working again, desperate for a solution to this situation. Yet, God had a different plan in store for me – a lesson that I would cherish forever.

A Different Answer:

As I sat in my car, with the rain pouring down, unable to continue; my heart grew heavy.  I needed to get my child to the appointment to determine what diagnosis awaited us and what his future looked like.  We had waited weeks for this appointment and I knew if I missed it, it would be months before we would receive the answers we desperately needed.  As I poured my heart out to God, something extraordinary occurred. The rain, which had been pounding relentlessly just moments before, began to taper off. Within minutes, the downpour subsided, and the clouds above seemed to part, allowing a gentle ray of sunlight to break through the darkness.

In awe, I pulled my rain-soaked arm back in the car, and watched in amazement as the rain ceased completely. It was as though God had heard my prayer, not by fixing my windshield wipers, but by stopping the rain itself. In that very moment, I felt a profound sense of peace enveloping me – a reassurance that I was not alone in my struggles and that there was a greater force at work.

Finding Comfort in the Storms:

Reflecting on this experience, I realized that life’s storms are not merely limited to physical challenges like a broken windshield wiper. Storms can manifest in various forms – be it personal hardships, emotional turmoil, or even spiritual crises. However, as I discovered, it is during these storms that our faith and connection to a higher power can be profoundly strengthened.

In the New Testament of the Bible, there’s a story that beautifully captures this idea. The story of Jesus calming the storm at sea (Mark 4:35-41) reminds us that even when the waters around us rage, we can find solace in Jesus’ presence. Just as Jesus had the power to calm the stormy seas, He can also calm the storms in our lives if we place our trust in Him.

Lessons Learned:

This seemingly ordinary incident with my windshield wipers taught me an invaluable life lesson. It reminded me of the significance of faith, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. It’s easy to become disheartened when our prayers aren’t answered in the way we expect them to be. However, this experience taught me that sometimes, God has a different plan for us; and his answer is always better.  God is so good.

I’ve learned that God’s presence in our lives is constant, even during the darkest storms. It’s during these difficult times that our faith is tested, leading us to a deeper connection with God. We can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is there to guide us through life’s challenges and storms, no matter how fierce they may seem.

Life is filled with unpredictable storms, some more literal than others. My experience with my windshield wipers taught me that amidst these storms, our faith can be the anchor that keeps us steady. Whether our prayers are answered as we expect or in ways we cannot foresee, Jesus remains the calming presence in our lives. As we journey through life’s challenges, let us remember to place our trust in Him, for He has the power to bring peace to even the stormiest seas of our lives.  Jesus calms our storms.
